ZIP-Chem Products

ZIP-Chem provides pressurised cylinders containing a measured volume of Ethyl Mercaptan. Typically, these cartridges are used in underground mines as mine warning devices (MWD).

Ethyl Mercaptan is the odourant that is added to LPG to give the gas its unique smell. As it is very highly concentrated gas odour, when released into the ventilation shafts of an underground mine, all miners know that when they smell gas to evacuate immediately. Many mines throughout Australia and Papa New Guinea have used these odourant mine warning devices for over 20 years.

The odourant is non flammable and is not ozone depleting.

The odour is detectable at a ratio of 1 Gram per 6200 Cubic Metres of air. A standard cartridge contains 100 grams, allowing it to odourise 620,000 Cubic Metres of air.
